In response to Jude’s post below – on the fateful night that Obama got elected I was eating chilli dogs. These were a new thing for me – hotdogs with a topping of yet more meat in the form of chilli mince. Sounds kinda gross, right? Well it was lovely, as were all the nachos, pretzels and other American-themed munch. It was so lovely in fact, that I’m going to keep on eating chilli dogs even when there isn’t the momentous occasion like the beginning of a new world order to justify it. If you fancy doing the same, then there’s a rather good recipe for chilli dogs here, or why not try your hand at making your very own Obama Dog – after all, what better way could there be of celebrating a new President than eating a sausage-based snack in his name?

Hi!
Thanks for the link to our “Obama Dog” recipe. Chili dogs were one of the major food groups of my NY Metro area childhood.
Next time you’re in the States, check out Rutt’s Hut (Off-putting name, you say? Whaddaya expect? It’s in Jersey!) famous for their deep-fried “Ripper” dog. Order your chili on the side and pile it on! (http://www.yelp.com/biz/rutts-hut-clifton)
Also in NJ: Callahan’s & Hiram’s; both are legendary producers of some amazing dogs.
And while you’re in the neighborhood, try another “meat-topped meat” specialty at a drive thru chain called Checker’s (http://www.checkers.com). They have a chili cheeseburger on their Value Menu that is a quintessential expression of the genre — yes, I’m referring to a fast food joint, but it’s really quite good. And at a buck, it’s a “broken drum deal” (i.e., ya can’t beat it!)
Cheers,
–Doug
